Why Do I Snore During Pregnancy?
Many women snore, just not as loudly as men usually apart from when they are pregnant when
the changes or snoring increase dramatically - find out why.
By Toby Russell
Lets be honest most women say they don't snore its just a male problem, in fact some
women are somewhat embarrassed to admit that they snore. To be fair its certainly more of a male problem with estimates suggesting that
over 44% of males suffer snoring to one degree or another and generally men don't sleep as soundly as women possibly as a result of
snoring.
Do Women
Snore
The simple answer is yes. Women snore more loudly with the increasing of age especially with weight gain.. Usually snoring starts
from the age 35 onwards, however for many women their snoring starts during pregnancy. Internationally many scientists have identified the
link between increasing snoring rate and pregnancy.
According to some research carried out in Sweden there is an increased risk factor of high blood pressure and delivering smaller
babies due to habitual snoring during pregnancy. The incidence of high blood pressure,
preeclampsia, abnormal accumulation of fluid in the tissues, and weight gain is most common for the habitual snores.
What is
snoring?
The root cause of snoring is vibration in the respiratory structure, which causes obstruction in the air movement while sleeping.
During sleeping the muscles, which are at the back of the throat, relax, due to which the air passage is partly blocked due to the
structures known as soft palate. The structures of the snoring are generally of the uvula and the soft plate.
Snoring & Pregnancy – what can be
done
For many pregnant mom's weight gain can be both rapid and quite sizeable, exercise becomes more difficult and uncomfortable and
there can be a tendency to sleep on your back as its more comfortable – all of these things contribute to snoring. Breathing is more
laboured and the more tired & stressed you are the more likely you are to snore.
So simple steps to
help
If you smoke give it up – you should anyway for the health of your baby.
Diet – avoid sweets, carbonated drinks, alcohol and lots of dairy especially just prior to going to bed.
Sleep pattern – raise your bed head either physically (on books/directories etc) or prop yourself up with pillows, this will help
keep your airway open during sleep.
Weight gain control – its difficult but try not to binge eat, try and keep exercising. Do breathing exercises to control and
better your airflow when you are sleeping.
Keep healthy and well and hopefully with the correct exercise program and some commitment after the child is born any weight gain
can soon be lost and there's every chance your snoring will decrease as well.
